Hello everyone. I just wanted to let you know that my Mr. Linky membership is expiring and I have decided not to renew it. It has been fun (encouraging and keeps me accountable!) to write Tune-Up Tuesdays however, though some may comment, few link up. I have been persistent throughout the year however, I now feel that it is time to retire it.

TUT will still appear once or twice a month but without Mr. Linky. You are always welcome to play along and leave your link in the comments. Our next TUT, we’ll continue on from Get It, Together!

Here are the Tune Ups from the past year. Because of the Blogger to WordPress changeover, the tags and categories still need to be finished therefore I didn’t have time to locate them all.

I mentioned that this tiny little quote issued a big challenge to me.

“A goal without a plan is just a wish.”

Making it SMART

The idea of smart plans came from a review I did on an Epicure product. Who’d have thought it would have such an impact on me. A SMART goal is one that is Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely. In order to maximize our chances of success, each goal should cover most of these areas.

A Word

Tricia mentioned last year that she chooses a word for the year. After much thought, prayer and having come across this idea so much in the past few weeks, my word for 2010 is INTENTIONAL.
More specifically, being intentional about:

Growing in the Lord

Nurturing my marriage

Raising, training and teaching my tots

Reaching out to others with the gospel

A Verse

“And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of offense toward God and toward men.” Acts 24:16
I discovered this verse a few months ago and it has crossed my mind so often! I want this to be the focus of 2010. As I have meditated on this verse, the Lord has brought many thoughts to my mind and reinforced that He has chosen this verse for me.

“And herein” – A declaration of intent! A statement that from this point on… or a resolve. This is a great way to start the year

“Do I exercise myself” – It won’t all come naturally. It will take work, determination, will-power, reliance on the Lord.

“To have always” – Consistent!

“Conscience Void of Offence” – When you first read this, you may think about not offending God or man but the more I’ve thought about it the more firmly I realize that this verse isn’t about not offending men. It’s about having a conscience void of offense. When we are doing right, standing up for right and proclaiming right, someone is bound to take offense. But if my goal is to have a clear conscience, then I will strive to do the classic WWJD in all circumstances. Note: the more Christ-like we become, the more the Holy Spirit convicts and fine tunes us.

“Toward God and toward Men” – My primary and first goal is to be void of offense before God and a natural by-product of that will be that I will have one before most men as well. I know that often we can have the attitude, “I don’t care what other people think” but I believe that while we can’t govern our actions by what others will think, their opinions of us are important! It should be Christ they see through us.

A Plan

SPIRITUAL: Since the Lord ought to be my first priority, He should be at the top of my list. I admit that sometimes it is easy for me to jumble priorities and when that happens, chaos ensues.

In 2010, I will strive to put him first in all areas, my day included. One of the books that I read this year and loved was Passionate Housewives Desperate for God. In it, they dispel the myth of “perfect” morning quiet/prayer time for those of us with littles, which was liberating to read. At the same time though, it shouldn’t keep us from striving for it, but rather free us from the guilt for those times that we can’t.

I have never read the whole bible through. It seems like everyone has but I haven’t. Though saved at a young age, it wasn’t until the Lord drew me back to his side (after a difficult miscarriage), that I really began to get serious about my walk with Him. Alas, losing Isaiah, then having Chloe, then John, I have to say that I never seem to have time. This year, I am going to read through the NT. I know that the whole bible is too large a goal for me but if I read two + books a month, the NT is a do-able goal for me!

MARRIAGE: is the next most important thing to me. And you know what, sometimes I get that mixed up too. When the littles are so, well, little, they require so much extra attention and sometimes I forget that DH needs my attention too. We do welcome daddy home (most days) but I need to do more. Our marriage is wonderful but filled with many areas that need a little work.

Miscommunication is something that I believe will always be a bit of a struggle. While we rarely ‘fight’, we certainly can get snappy at each other sometimes and most of the time it has to do with miscommunication. We have talked about it in the the past and agree that ‘subtle’ hints are not the way to go for us. We both need to clearly (and kindly) speak about what is on our minds, and what we are thinking. Listening more and talking less often may be the solution.

Expectation is another key area that goes hand in hand with communication. I’m not sure that DH struggles with this as I do but it is something to work on this year. In many cases, we need to lower our expectations of ourselves and our spouses. I know often I expect him to do something, know something or say something and he has no idea. This frustrates me and I feel like a need isn’t being met and I get grumpy or snappy.

If we can communicate expectations and listen more and clarify to help avoid misunderstandings, 2010 will be a great year for our marriage!

PARENTING: Loving, teaching, training and disciplining my tots is the third priority in my life and one that is filled with joy, delight, frustration and challenge. Though I could list a million areas that I need to work on in order to better raise my littles, keeping it simple and attainable, I’ll just list two:

Depending more on the Lord for PATIENCE to respond in a kind and loving tone when dealing with an attitude or action for yet the millionth time. Patience to explain when necessary, to love when I don’t feel loveable and to give myself wholly when it costs.

Being CONSISTANT in rules, consequences, discipline and in love.

FINANCES: are something I seldom touch on here at Beautiful Calling because I am in no way qualified. I will say that this year I read Dave Ramsey’s Total Money Makeover and was amazed.

I hope to re-read it with my husband in the New Year and talk about how we can implement it into our lives.

As of January 1st, I will be an epicure consultant and hope to contribute to our finances through that.

I am thankful that we both share the same desire: me to be at home raising and training our littles. We are still learning to work as a team when it comes to finances and everything else.

COMMUNITY: I hope to be more involved in our community in the coming year.

The biggest thing that I want to work on is sharing the gospel. Sure, it is easy to share with someone who expresses an interest first but sharing my faith with someone I don’t know or who hasn’t brought it up first? Nope, that is scary. To just hand a tract to someone you don’t know? I’ve never done that. Ever. Door to door knocking to invite people to church? Never done that. Ever. This year, I want to try (Lord, give me courage) to be more bold for Him.

In 2007 I sent out quarterly letters to seniors and shut ins but 2008 just got so busy. I think I sent out one. I know that snail-mail is a fun surprise and can be a real blessing. It is also a super easy ministry to do with the littles. I want to sent out at least once card per month to someone who could use a snail-mail {hug}.

I also live very close to a nursing home. I often drive by it and think, “Oh, one day we’ll drop in and visit someone” but never do. Once the weather is warm again where we can walk that far without freezing, I would like to try get that visit in to some new friend just waiting to be met.

Antoine de Saint-Exupery French writer (1900 – 1944) said,

“A goal without a plan is just a wish.”

It really spoke to me when I read it the other day. Not because there is anything wrong with wishing for something but because it reminded me about the importance of goals and plans. This thought has come across my path a lot this past year and again the other day at the Epicure meeting I was at, Carmen spoke about goals. This tiny little quote issued a big challenge to me. Now I am not a big “New Years Resolution” sort of person but this year I’m working on a list of goals for 2010 and establishing a plan to help me reach them.

Do you or your family as a whole set goals for the upcoming year?

If so, did you reach them in 2009? Have you already set your 2010 goals?

If not, what kind of goals do you have for 2010?

Areas to consider when setting goals:

Personal Challenges

Marriage-Related

Parenting

In Your Home

Financially

In the Community

Career-Related

The TUT on December 31st (and January 7th) will have my goals and a Mr. Linky for you to link up yours. If you don’t have a blog, just leave your thoughts in the comment section. What a great way to exchange ideas and encouragement for the start of the new year! I hope you’ll participate because one random participant will receive a great prize to help you on your way for 2010!
I have a lovely wood sideboard that contains beautiful hand painted dishes with gold edges that were hand crafted and brought back from African carefully, piece by piece. They were a gift from my mother-in-law to my DH long before I arrived on the scene. He had them displayed in a glass china cabinet but since we replaced that with solid wood Mennonite furniture, there really isn’t anywhere to display them. Since they are far too precious to use with two little tots right now, I decided to pack them up into Rubbermaid totes and store them. This frees up the sideboard for board games and Chloe’s learning material; a completely logical choice since both of those activities generally happen at the big dining room table. This has been something that I have been putting of and finally did. Let me tell you, it feels great! It didn’t take long at all but with that little tune-up completed, a weight has been lifted. Hurray!

Isaiah 11:1 And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:

Last December I stumbled upon the idea of a Jesse Tree at Biblical Womanhood and knew I wanted to incorporate it into our own family traditions. A great opportunity to learn about key events and the lineage of Christ that brought us the birth of the Savior. A perfect way to help keep HIM front and center amidst all the other activities that we are involved in. Often Christians get caught up in the hustle and bustle of shopping, decorations, entertaining and we forget that CHRIST is what Christmas is really all about.

Now we do have many holiday traditions that have nothing to do with our faith and there isn’t anything wrong with that. We do baking, caroling, gift-giving, stockings, parties and dinners. And of course, we have the chocolate advent calendars. Growing up it was always a tradition to finish dinner and then dart down the hall to dig out that chocolate. I’m all grown up with a young family of my own now. We’re certainly keeping that chocolate tradition (mommy included!), but we’ll add a new one too: The Jesse Tree! When daddy gets home, we’ll read our scripture, put up our ornament and then move on to the chocolate.

Since I’ve been busy, I didn’t do a whole lot of advance planning (*sigh*). This year we’re not creating our own fabulous ornaments as some do (great job Stephanie!). We’re making paper ornaments, mounted on construction paper then laminated. I’ve printed the scripture reference (KJV) on the front and the key verse on the back. I’m using the templates here: Advent Reflections and Printable Ornaments. I also found a scripture guideline here and here. Both of these links were helpful but I would just like to say that I am not endorsing either of these sites beliefs’. I didn’t spend any time checking out either of their doctrinal beliefs, I am simply using their Jesse Tree information for reference. I had originally planned to just put our paper ornaments on a poster board paper tree hung on the wall (trying to be frugal), however, I found this little tree at Lowe’s for $4.98 and thought it would suit our needs just perfect!

If you able to make the investment, this book looks really interesting and I love the look of these premade ornaments but since we’re trying to watch our spending, my plan will suit us just fine! After all, the focus is Christ right?

The Challenge? Enjoy the season with Christ as our focus!

How can you (or do you!) keep Christ front and center this Christmas?

——————————————————————-

Well this week I crossed another item off that to-do list! I let go of perfection and gave my friend her housewarming basket just as it was.

The Story: I have a good friend, Carm, whom I have known for almost 10 years (yikes!). We’ve worked together, lived together, laughed together and cried together. Her and her husband (hi Chris!) had a beautiful home not too far from us and then one day she called and told me she was moving!! They now live in an amazing home in the country, even more beautiful than their previous home and this one even has a huge in-ground pool. I bet you can guess where I spent many a sunny day this past August.

Anyway, they moved in to their new home in August and I knew immediately that I wanted to make her a phenomenal housewarming gift basket. I envisioned the PERFECT basket full of handmade goodness: pickles, peaches, cookies, fresh bread, banana bread, baguette, apple cider and more. It is now November and it was still ‘coming’.

This week, I decided to let go of the idea of perfection (like last week). I chose a basket, put in what I had preserved – two types of pickles, canned peaches and canned cider. I also added a bag of oatmeal raisin cookies and some mulling spices. I tied a pretty ribbon on it and gave it to her. She was thrilled. The only thing that would have made it more perfect was had I remembered to put in the card. LOL

I struggle with perfection (I’ve mentioned this a lot). I want everything to be perfect and just right whatever it is. Often, things get put off or not done because I want it to be done perfect. Alas, with littles and human limitations, this isn’t possible and isn’t healthy. Yes, of course, we can strive for perfection but we need to be satisfied with our best efforts too. The desire for perfection is an ongoing battle for me. Just when I feel I have a handle on it in one area, it pops up in another.

The Tune-Up: where can you let go of perfection today and just give it your best effort and be satisfied with that?

————————————————————————–

Well, I’ve had a productive week! There has been so much going on lately; a combination of personal troubles, scheduling troubles, an overloaded to-do list and (I felt) some sliding priorities. This past week while I was unplugged, I really got down to business.

MAKE A LIST

First, I thought about what was overwhelming me. I made a list. I listed all my thoughts of outstanding things to do, my concerns about everything, the areas I felt frustrated. I had a big list as I did a complete “brain dump” (not sure who’s term that is). I narrowed the list down to the top three things.

A quarrel with a friend

A desk hidden under clutter and filing

Feeling like I spend too much time cleaning

TACKLE IT IN BITE-SIZED TASKS

The Quarrel:

This one is quite personal so I’ll be brief: I had a quarrel with a long-time friend. It started out an innocent misunderstanding that escalated and left me very hurt. The I came across Acts 24:16 “And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void to offence toward God, and toward men.” When I read that, it helped me enormously to understand what my course of action should be. It is amazing how timeless the bible can be; it is still relevant and able to help us make wise choices!

The Desk:

My desk has been an ongoing issue. I was attempting to deal with it back in February but the task was just so large and I lacked time. With two 2 year olds and a 1 year old around, it is hard to find time to deal with it all. This is one of the areas that cause me great stress because it isn’t a great environment in which to work and I always have it hanging over my head.

Assess what is there: Everything ends up on my desk. Filing, items needing repair, things to list on ebay/kijiji, office supplies, things to follow up on, letters to write, coupons, invoices to enter etc.

Make a Plan: Getting it clean won’t help. I need to develop a plan, identify why it gets this way and set up a system to avoid desk overload. Setting up a system without first dealing with everything there will not help because I can’t implement a new system with all the undealt with stuff hanging around.

Implementing the Plan:

Chloe had a sleepover at moms. John naps for 3 hours and plays quietly the remainder of the time (whoo hoo!) and it is a day that Jaiden isn’t here.

Pile everything onto my bed (may as well be comfy while I sort).

Make Piles: Do Today, Must File, Coupon Related, Blog Related etc.

Purging: I had a recycling bin there. Anything that was unneeded (grocery receipts, outdated coupons etc) were recycled immediately. I also let go of some things that I would like to do but just do not have the time right now. (i.e. write to Gymboree about the dress that the hem let go on after the first wash)

Action: I filled everything that didn’t need action immediately. Then I looked at what was left. I have 3 drawers under my desk. I made one my personal “getting to it/not urgent” drawer, one my coupon drawer, one my blog related drawer and then I have an inbox on my desk for DH to put invoices and such to enter. Though I haven’t yet got caught up on invoices and such, they are stacked neatly in the inbox where I plan to get to them within the next week. My desk space is cleared off with only the essentials out. Repairs now are either done immediately or have a spot in the laundry room. Ebay items are on a shelf or in a bin (both in the garage). I actually have moved my “official” desk to our upstairs office and my antique secretaire desk is more our command/supplies center downstairs now.

Now that the backlog has been taken care of, and a new system in in place, I felt an immense peace. I should take a new pic of my fabulous clean (and functioning!) workspace but my camera is downstairs and it is late. Maybe tomorrow.

Too Much Time Cleaning

The past few weeks I feel like I’ve been waking up, feeding the littles, cleaning, feeding/caring for littles, cleaning, DH comes home, we eat, I care for the littles, we watch a movie/read/computer time etc. and it is bed. Our Beautiful Calling is Not About Housework but sometimes I forget that. I’m not sure how I got off track. Don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t neglecting my littles but I just was feeling a little like things were starting to head in a direction that was not the one I intended.

Assess, Plan, Action:

I started by doing those things which needed to be done.

Then I thought about what I was doing and what areas seemed to take the most time. Sometimes our tasks can grow to fit the time allowance. The opposite is true as well. When we aren’t aiming for absolute perfection, we can usually fit a task into a time allotment.

By tackling the “must dos” for the day first thing with an allotted time frame, and with the help of a loose *revised* schedule; the past week our home has been (mostly) clean and ordered.

I have done many puzzles, read many books, spend time visiting my mom, played numerous games of candy land and enjoyed a whole lot of walks in the beautiful fall weather!

I needed a reminder that houses are ONLY tools and that family is my calling.

I’m a week into a new bible study on biblical parenting and it is awesome. It has been such an encouragement to me The bible is such a poignant reminder of just how important the mothering aspect of my Beautiful Calling is!!

This past week, I spent hardly any time on the computer. Honestly, it didn’t make that much of a difference. What made the difference? I’m getting more done in less time by truly focusing on my priorities and letting go of perfection.

————————————————————————–

Here is my closet; simple as it is.

I keep all of our winter things in a rubber-maid tub in the garage. When I unpack it, I repack it with the summer/spring articles from the closet and put it back in the garage. In spring when I dig it out, I’ll put the winter ones back in.

Even the spring things that will probably not fit go in even if I am planning to sell them. What to Sell talks a little bit about selling in season.

I have 3M hooks on the interior doors of our closet for little ones to hang up their own <strike>cats</strike> coats. I was going to delete my typing error (cats) but left it in because it made me giggle!

We have a white basket where Chloe puts her boots and shoes. A contained area really helps her.

We have a wooden shoe rack for DH’s footwear.

At the back we also have a smaller tub that contains DH’s shoe shine/care supplies. I put my snow boots and church boots on top of that.

The shelf in the top of the closet always holds my diaper bag; packed and RTG as DH would say. That means ‘ready to go’. I purposely leave it cleared because that is where I put the items that we need to take somewhere. (Donation items, errands, returns etc.)

There is also my two pairs of special sandals in boxes up top. These are special because I bought them in a real shoe store. One pair is basic black and the other is beautiful pink and purple. I love both pair!

We have two shoe bags in the closet. One contains my shoes and the other contains adult mittens, hats and scarves.

We also have a bench by the door that has a spot under it for two baskets. These contain the littles’ mittens and such.

Oh, and we have our library book bag on the top hook inside the closet. Though I have to admit, we took a break from the library (not reading) during summer and gorgeous fall weather. Now that winter is back, we’ll need to resume our visits!

Simple Kids is having a Winterizing series this week if you want to pop over a take a peek.

Please accept this post as my official notice that I am sick today and will not be in. On my blog anyway. Calling in sick from mothering isn’t an option. LOL. Though most days I am overjoyed to be a mother and to be able to stay at home, on rare occasions (mostly when I am sick), do I think back to those pre-baby days where being sick meant sleeping in, reading a book on the couch in PJ’s, and eating ice cream or popsicles in bed. Did anyone else ever do that?

It’s TUT and I’ve got nothing; actually that isn’t true. I’ve got a cold and I have two little ones with colds. Does that count? So I am going to ‘tune-up’ us. We’re spending the day in our jammies. We’re going to watch a video (Fox & the Hound?), drink some hot chocolate, read some books. Thankfully, comfort food is on the official menu for tonight (shepherd’s pie).

Prevention is Key; but it doesn’t guarantee you won’t get sick!

So the ‘official’ arrival of the cold season once again reminds me of the importance of a few things which can help keep you healthy.

Washing your hands often

Cough into your arm/elbow

Disinfecting taps, handles and knobs frequently

Getting enough rest

Get out for a walk; fresh air and exercise

Adequate water consumption

Balanced meals including plenty of fruits and veggies

If you or your littles have been sick; replace your toothbrush!

Amy mentioned a few things about H1N1 prevention earlier this week. If you missed it, here is the link.

So that is it. Not sure if I will be in on Friday either but I’ll see you soon.

___________________________________________________

Do you have a tune-up you are working on or completed? Link up (directly to your post) or share a comment! If you could mention TUT and link back so others can join in too, that would be appreciated!
